President's Office announced on Thursday that Maldives will be donating a significant amount of the vaccines Maldives has received to Nepal and Bangladesh.

Maldives has donated 200,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Bangladesh on Wednesday under this decision.

Maldives has already achieved high inoculation rates among its eligible population. As of Wednesday evening, 392,773 people have received at least one dose of the Covid vaccine while 343,149 people have been fully vaccinated. High risk individuals are receiving booster shots as well.

When Maldives attempted to buy 700,000 doses of vaccines they received a lot of help from the international community.

Health Protection Agency (HPA) has previously stated that some of the vaccines Maldives have received are approaching their expiration date soon and that they were looking for ways to make sure they can be used before they expire.

Maldives is one of the few nations that were able to inoculate a large percentage of their population against Covid within a short period. HPA has noted that the high vaccination rates is what is leading to Maldives to have reached a new normal without cases surging again.
