President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appoints a Special Envoy to the investigation on the attack on Former President and Majilis Speaker Mohamed Nasheed on Wednesday.

Abbas Faiz from the UK was appointed as the President's Special Envoy to this investigation. He has previously worked in Amnesty International, researching on social, traditional, and political issues of South Asia.

According to the President's Office, Abbas will be working in the Presidential Office until the case is settled in Court.

The assassination attempt on Majilis Speaker Nasheed on May 6 injured him grievously. After multiple life-saving surgeries in ADK hospital, he has flown to Germany to seek further rehabilitation and medical treatment.

Police confirmed in a press conference held on Thursday the man they arrested in Baa Atoll Dharavndhoo the previous night was in fact, connected to the attack on Nasheed. This increases the number of people arrested in connection to the attack to four.

The Prosecutor General (PG) will be determining the capacity in which Abbas can participate in the investigation. He will be further providing assistance and guidance where necessary, President's Office said. If required, he would make a report on the investigation as well.

Abbas is an Associate Lecturer in the University of Essex School of Law since 2017. Prior to that, he worked at Amnesty International as a South Asia Specialist for 30 years, leaving the institution in 2016.
