The longstanding opposing stances between former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed, regarding the governing system for Maldives, came to a head on social media this Monday.

The longstanding opposing stances between former presidents Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and Mohamed Nasheed, regarding the governing system for Maldives, came to a head on social media this Monday.

Following the constitutional amendment submitted by parliamentary representative for Kaafu Atoll's Kaashidhoo constituency MP Abdulla Jabir, which seeks to change the current presidential system to a parliamentary system, Gayoom tweeted defending the presidential system as the "most suitable in terms of politics, society and economy" for the nation.
