A representative and an observer of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) / People's National Congress (PNC) coalition who harassed international observers during Saturday's presidential election have been suspended by the Elections Commission, and their permits have been revoked.

EC took action against a local observer and a party representative who harassed international observers from India during the presidential election. Their actions were deemed a breach of the code of conduct, leading to their suspension and the revocation of their permits by the commission.

At a special meeting of the Elections Commission (EC), it was decided to suspend the two individuals from participating in any activities related to the second round of the presidential election scheduled for September 30, as well as two consecutive elections that will follow.

The EC also decided to give the party an opportunity to replace the two people who were suspended.

A video that circulated on social media showed two Indian observers being verbally abused and forced out of a voting center. The observers were accused of approaching the ballot box.

EC had previously said that harassment of international observers invited by the commission is unacceptable.
