Kaashidhoo MP and Leader of Dhivehi Rayyithunge Party (DRP) Abdulla Jabir on Saturday, decided to retract the case submitted against former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom.

According to local media Mihaaru, Jabir confirmed the decision, stating that his mother asked Jabir to forgive a disputed loan of MVR 29 million. Jabir claimed that Gayoom borrowed the money as campaign funds for the last presidential elections, but had later denied taking such a loan

"Maumoon told me he spent the money to usher in democracy. So I believe he spent the funds on the people", said Jabir.

Jabir initially submitted the case without evidence, to which Police decided not to investigate the matter.

Local media Mihaaru cited Jabir as having previously stated that he granted MVR 29 million to Gayoom as a loan with interest. He claimed that the two of them discussed the transaction at a hotel in Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur.

Jabir further alleged that Gayoom had mortgaged his residence 'Kinbigasdhoshuge' in capital Male' to take the loan.
