Highlighting the importance of making use of the experience and wisdom of senior citizens, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said in his Presidential Address today that he is working to push back the retirement age to 75 for those who do not want to retire at the age of 65.

The President said that in many cases, it is difficult for those who have worked for 65 years without interruption to go into retirement as soon as they become of an age to do so.

"The government is working to establish a way where those who want to continue serving even after the retirement age of 65 are able to do so until they turn 75, on an agreement basis," the President revealed.

The President also noted that the government has begun work to make a register of senior citizens, and to establish dedicated social centers for them in Male' and the atolls.

The President also asserted that special priority will be given in this administration to those with special needs and disabilities. The President added that Civil Service jobs, as well as posts in state owned enterprises, will be made more available to them, with the establishment of new regulations the government is currently drafting.

"We will also be allocating 500 housing units from the new social housing schemes to those with special needs," he said.
