President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that work will commence this year on building two new airports in the country.

In his Presidential Address today, the President said that in strengthening the country's economy, the highest priority has to be given to expanding the transport system.

"The ongoing projects of building domestic airports will reach completion soon. In addition to this, we will commence work on building two new airports this year. Recently, the cabinet has decided to introduce the most modern, most secure helicopter services in the Maldives, and have started work on implementing that," President Dr Muizzu said.

The President also said that special attention will be given to improve taxi services. He said that, under these efforts, the government has already begun compiling a register of taxi drivers. As the register is completed, the project will include the establishment of a digital payment platform as well.

He further revealed that large aircraft will be brought in this year to implement the broadening of international destinations that the national airline, Maldivian, flies to.

According to the President, Maldivian airlines will be acquiring two new wide body aircrafts in the coming six months, and will introduce seven new destinations.
