The president has declared his decision not to establish the day of the presidential address - the day of the first meeting of the People's Parliament's new term - as a public holiday.

On January 21st 2019, during the tenure of the former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, the day of the presidential statement's hearing was fixed as a holiday.

However, the President's Office stated today that President Dr. Muizz has decided that the day of the presidential statement will no longer be a public holiday.

The Parliament Secretariat has begun preparations for the first presidential address following Dr. Mohamed Muizz's inauguration on November 17 last year. The address will be delivered at 0900 hrs on the 5th of February.

The Constitution of Maldives outlines that each year, on the first Parliament meeting of the new term, the President should address the People's Parliament illuminating the country's current state and the president's views on the necessary future development of the country.

With the People's Parliament's current term coming to a close, the election for selecting new members of the Parliament has been set to be held on Sunday, 17th March.
