Former president Mohamed Nasheed on Saturday, accepted a royal invitation extended by the reigning monarch of Saudi Arabia, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
Sources from MDP indicate that Nasheed will embark on his journey to the east on Monday, however, no further details pertaining to the trip were revealed.
The King, who maintained close ties with outgoing President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom during his administration, extended his congratulations to President-Elect Solih via phone call, following his victory in the presidential elections held on September 23.
The two reportedly exchanged wishes to further strengthen relations between both countries.
In addition to the Saudi King himself, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammad bin Salman, also called and offered his congratulations to the President-Elect.
Since King Salman’s ascension to the throne, Saudi aid to the Maldives has risen significantly, with both nations having worked closely during President Yameen’s tenure.
