Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that taking decisions in an anti-India stance would not prove beneficial to Maldivians.

In a post he made on social media X, Nasheed said that India is the country that has held closest ties to the Maldives historically, and that they have also been the country that extends the most support.

"Taking actions against India will not be good for the Maldivian people," stated Nasheed, who has always maintained close ties with the neighbouring country.

In a previous interview to an Indian newspaper, Nasheed said that he believed President Dr Mohamed Muizzu would not object to the stationing of 75 Indian military personnel in the Maldives for the objective of overseeing operations of the helicopters that the Indian government had gifted to the country.

"A couple of hundred people might come and pose challenges to the Maldives. Therefore there is no better option for the Maldives than to maintain strong defence ties with India," he said at the time.

The President's Spokesperson even at the time dismissed Nasheed's comments, stating they did not stem from any discussions held with Muizzu.

Meanwhile, the current government has held discussions with India, formally requesting them to remove Indian military personnel currently stationed in the country.
