The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) President Mohamed Nasheed has resigned from the party today.

In his letter to MDP, Nasheed said he does not think it is the best course of action for him to remain with MDP in light of the current political landscape of the country. Nasheed announced his resignation via twitter.

While Nasheed decided to leave MDP, his close associates have submitted a petition to the Election Commission to register a new party under the name of The Democrats.

Although The Democrats announced its intention to field a candidate for the upcoming presidential election, Speaker Nasheed did not provide a direct response to questions on the matter during a press conference held in parliament on Monday.

However, Nasheed said that he does not wish for MDP presidential candidate President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to win the presidential election, and he remained with MDP to regain the party. Nasheed clarified that the formation of The Democrats was also motivated by his ambition to reclaim MDP.

In response to the criticism from members of MDP PG group regarding the parliament proceedings, Nasheed expressed his disappointment and stated that he believes MDP is now operating in violation of the democratic principles and values that he has long believed in.

“It is very difficult for me to stay in MDP even if it has been many years,” Nasheed said.

"I am in MDP to take back the party. I have said that I will do it."

Nasheed officially launched anti-party activities after his failure in MDP's presidential primary. After many people signed up for the movement, discussions were held to form a coalition to defeat MDP by backing Jumhooree Party in the presidential election instead of MDP.

Following his failure to win MDP's presidential primary, Nasheed officially initiated anti-party activities. As a result, numerous individuals joined the "Fikurrege Dhirun" movement, leading to discussions about forming a coalition to support Jumhooree Party instead of MDP in the presidential election.

However, the discussions faced a setback when Nasheed proposed the idea of implementing a parliamentary system. Qasim, in a recent statement, mentioned that Nasheed had no intention of allowing anyone other than himself to assume power. Meanwhile, the formation of The Democrats was already in progress.

MDP had chosen not to take any action against Nasheed following the resignation of several individuals from the party and the establishment of The Democrats. The decision was made due to Nasheed's significant role in the formation of MDP and the establishment of democracy in the Maldives, said MDP's Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail.

When Nasheed submitted his resignation letter, Fayyaz expressed gratitude to Nasheed for his dedicated service to the party over the years.
