Former president Maumoon Abdul Qayoom supports naming a Malé road after Palestine.
The road in the capital Malé City which is to be named after Palestine, as passed by Malé City Council should be a significantly sized road, said former President Maumoon Abdul Qayoom today.
His statement was made on X (formerly Twitter), in which he said that he agrees with the decision to name a road in Malé after Palestine, but that the name should be given to a significantly sized road.
Yesterday, Malé City Council passed the decision which was proposed by Mayor Adam Azim as a show of solidarity for the people of Palestine amidst the ongoing genocide in Gaza and the West Bank.
Mayor Azim said that the suggestion was made as there are several roads in Malé which are yet to be named, of which one could be named after Palestine.
Majority of the members in attendance at the meeting today agreed with the Mayor’s suggestion. However, it has not been revealed exactly which road the name would be assigned to.
