Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) coalition's candidate Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said that the citizens would "wake up to an Independent Maldives" on October 1.

The opposition coalition's candidate made the statement while speaking to the people of Giraavaru community on Saturday evening, September 23.

During the meeting, Dr. Muizzu criticised the current administration's foreign policies.

"Several factors are converging, to which we cannot turn a blind eye. We must not idly stand by as the reins to our independence are loosened by our own hands. Today, we are witnessing this," said Dr. Muizzu.

He said that the runoff polls on Saturday, September 30, would decide the fate of the country's future. He added that the public would be bestowed with the power to save and decide the future of the nation.

"We must not cheapen ourselves or be willing to exchange our votes for a bundle of cash, a deal, a position, or even a project. We must not irresponsibly trade our authority for such meager benefits," Dr. Muizzu said.

"God willing, the dawn of October 1, would come to an Independent Maldives."

During Saturday's meeting, Dr. Muizzu reassured national security and independence will remain top priority after which urban development, housing, and economic growth projects would follow.

Dr. Muizzu further said that he is aware of how to attain economic prosperity and added he would prove it with his actions.

He affirmed his pledges were not smoke and mirrors, but based on technical assessment.
