Former President and Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed announced on Monday that he is breaking political ties with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih as their political beliefs are not aligned anymore.

Nasheed, who is currently in the United Kingdom getting further medical treatment for injuries sustained on assassination attempt on May 6, said in the ruling party MDP's Whatsapp groups that he can no longer stand by the President politically.

One of the most notable things Nasheed said in the multiple texts he sent to various groups is that if necessary, he would ask Former President Abdulla Yameen and his opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM)'s aid.

"If (former) President Yameen and PPM supports moderate religious view, I will ask for their help," Nasheed had said.

Yameen is currently serving a 5 year jail sentence for money laundering but was placed under house arrest after a surge in Covid cases in prison.

Nasheed and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has had disagreements in the past as well. Most recently, Nasheed has expressed his disappointment over how the investigations around the terror attack against him was being conducted.

This disagreement will lead to MDP becoming two factions. This disparity is already seen in how parliament members from MDP work now.

Despite stepping away from the President politically, Nasheed has not cut ties with the him on a personal level. Both of them grew up together and are each other's closest friends.
