President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday shared key details of the governments housing policy with the media.

Speaking to the press via a virtual press conference, he stated that although the administration's initial pledge was to develop 10,000 housing units, the current requirements in the area has exceeded this figure by 7,000 units.

President Solih also announced that projects for 4,000 units have been contracted so far. This is in addition to the 1,000 units already underway, raising the total number under development to 5,000.

As per the president, the governments new housing policy pivots on council housing, affordable housing, and mid-range and high-end housing categories.

Additionally, the government has plans to build 15,000 housing units during its tenure. From that, 5,000 will begin development this year and the president announced land plot allocation for another 1,2000 in Gulhifalhu.

Addressing questions posed regarding the housing needs of Male' residents, President Solih revealed that the government is planning a land reclamation project for land plot allocation and that further details will be given in due course.

Furthermore, he responded to questions regarding the "Hiya" public housing scheme and stated that his administration does not believe that one-bedroom housing units are feasible. Hence, as opposed to the categories announced by the previous administration, the ones developed in the future would feature two-bedroom and three-bedroom units.

He also noted the "exemplary" work by the Committee Investigating Public Housing Schemes.
