President briefs media on National Resilience and Recovery Plan

President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Wednesday held a virtual press conference to share details of the National Resilience and Recovery Plan (NRRP) with the media.

Speaking about recovering from the economic downfall faced by the country due to the ongoing global pandemic COVID-19, the President stated that the government was forced to revise its timeline for development in order to cater to NRRP.

Speaking in this regard he noted that the government has been successful in implementing sound economic and fiscal policies and regaining lost ground after the lockdown phase.

He expressed hope that the economy will make a positive turn by year-end as the recovery efforts are going at a good pace. He also envisioned further progress and prosperity after overcoming challenges by 2022

Speaking about the administration's efforts to provide affordable education, President Solih highlighted over 10,000 students enrolling on the free degree scheme. He said that within the next few years, the benefits of this programme will show when these students graduate and join the workforce.

Additionally, he addressed the pledge made by the administration to provide essential services to all the islands. In this regards, he said that projects will commence before year-end to establish water and sewerage networks in islands without access to those services. Currently, tenders and being prepared and contract signing will take place within the upcoming months.

Noting that this administration had to take on the burden of unpaid high-interest loans withdrawn by previous administrations, he added that approaches have been formulated to manage debt in repayment.

Furthermore, he said that the government is working to plan and seek better repayment options and assistance from friendly nations with regard to debt in foreign policy.

Apart from this, President Solih shared details about other topics and answered questions posed by the media.
