Ex-VP Adeeb, ex-MD Ziyath to testify against Sun Investment

The government, on Sunday, listed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb and former Managing Director of Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Company (MMPRC) Abdulla Ziyath, as witnesses against Sun Investment Private Limited.

The state has raised money laundering charges against Sun Investment, alleging that the company laundered funds through MMPRC during the leasing of Fuh'giri, Raa Atoll for tourism development.

Sun Investment has officially denied any involvement in the MVR 3.3 billion MMPRC corruption scandal.

Although the government presented its evidence during the hearing held on Sunday, Sun Investment requested additional time to prepare their defence.

Subsequently, Judge Ahmed Shakeel stated that the company would be given a period of five days to present evidence.

While Adeeb and Ziyath were convicted over their involvement in the MMPRC scandal, and are serving prison sentences of 20 years and 11 years respectively, both individuals had signed plea bargains with the state.

The Prosecutor General's Office also charged former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom with money laundering and accepting bribes in connection to the leasing of Fuh'giri.

Yameen is accused of exerting undue influence to acquire USD 1.1 million (MVR 17.2 million) during the leasing process and laundering the funds through Sun Investment Private Limited and Sun Construction and Engineering Private Limited.

A separate trial is ongoing regarding the additional charges raised against Yameen, who is already serving a five-year prison sentence over on money laundering charges concerning the embezzlement of MVR 3.3 billion from Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

He was convicted of money laundering over a transaction that involved a deposit of USD 1 million by SOF Pvt Ltd, to his personal account at Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB).
