Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People's National Congress (PNC) have also decided to seek an intervention in the case ongoing at Supreme Court (SC) regarding the no confidence motion against Parliament Speaker Mohamed Nasheed.

PPM announced this intention on a post made on social media X on Wednesday.

The first hearing of the case has been scheduled for Sunday. The Democrats, which Nasheed is a member of, have also previously announced that they will be an intervenor in this case.

The Supreme Court bench hearing the case will be presided by Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir. The bench also includes Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Judge Husnu Suood, Judge Ali Rasheed Hussain and Judge Dr Mohamed Ibrahim.

MDP has appealed to the court to rule that no other parliamentary work can be conducted prior to deciding on the matter of no confidence against the Speaker.

The party submitted the case to SC following the cancellation of consecutive parliamentary sittings on the matter due to Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla remaining on sick leave.

The Parliament Secretariat maintains that as per the parliament regulations, a sitting to confer on the matter of Speaker's no-confidence can only be presided over by the Deputy Speaker. Hence, the secretariat has been cancelling sittings on receiving notice from Eva that she is unable to attend.

MDP's Legal Team disagrees, claiming the Secretary General's decision contravenes Article 82 of the Constitution and Article 44 of the Parliament Regulations.
