Leader of opposition coalition AbdulRaheem Abdulla and his wife Dhiyana Hussain has tested positive for COVID-19.

As they found they are COVID positive on Thursday evening, they are now quarantining in their home. Former MP for Fonadhoo constituency AbdulRaheem has a history with cardiac issues and uses a pacemaker as well. He is considered high-risk to suffer more severe symptoms from the disease.

Even though Dhiyana tested for COVID as well, she seemed to be doing well at the moment.

Maldives is currently facing one of the worst COVID waves, with over 1,000 people testing positive every 24 hours now. However as the healthcare system is overwhelmed at the moment, the 24 hour statistics Health Protection Agency (HPA) releases every evening at 2200hrs includes backlogged samples that were taken days prior. Therefore it does not show the most accurate COVID case update either.

On Thursday, for the first time ever, HPA announced over 2000 daily COVID positives. They said that from the 2,149 announced to be positive, only 49 were samples taken on Thursday. The other positive results were from samples taken on earlier dates in the week.

So far 50,802 people have tested positive for COVID in Maldives, and 119 people have passed away from the disease.
