Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued an order to cease feeding all species of rays and skates in the Maldives.
In a statement issued yesterday, the EPA noted that it has observed a growing trend of feeding rays and skates, which raises concerns about the impact this may have on the natural behaviour of these species.
The agency noted that rays and skates are protected in the country under Protected Species Regulation, which prohibits harmful activities including feeding.
They warned that feeding rays, although a unique experience for both locals and tourists, could lead to an increase in dangerous incidents as there is a risk of sharks being attracted to areas where rays are fed.
They noted that an increase in incidents involving injury to snorkelers and divers, especially in feeding areas, have been recorded.
"It is essential that all interactions with protected species be conducted in a manner that prioritizes human safety, sustainability, and the preservation of the environment," the statement reads.
EPA said that persons found violating the regulation and guidelines will be subject to legal action.
