Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and People’s National Congress (PNC) candidate and Malé City Mayor Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has pledged, if elected as president he will declare the last 10 days of Ramadan each year as public holidays.

Dr. Muizzu made this statement during his visit to Baa Atoll Eydhafushi as part of his presidential campaign. During the rally, he pledged that his administration would give top priority to the establishment and strengthening of Islamic principles while also promoting greater public affection for the Islamic faith. He further committed to creating more opportunities to encourage the love of Islamic practices and activities.

Under this policy, Dr. Muizzu announced that his government would designate the last 10 days of Ramadan, which is regarded as a spiritually significant period for Muslims, as public holidays. This move aims to provide government employees with more time to engage in worship and devotion.

Declaring the last 10 days of Ramadan as public holidays will enhance public employees to embark on Umrah without acquiring additional leaves from their work, Dr. Muizzu said and added that the period would be considered as school holidays for students in grade eight and lower.

In addition to reinforcing Islamic principles within his government, Dr. Muizzu pledged to forge stronger bilateral relationships with Islamic nations. He emphasized the crucial need to enhance ties with Arab nations, which he stated had experienced a decline over the past five years. Dr. Muizzu underscored that maintaining strong ties with Arab League countries would be beneficial for the Maldives.

He highlighted that many citizens face challenges in finding means of income after retirement, which can lead to depression and other issues. As the candidate for the PPM/PNC, he announced that citizens between the ages of 65 and 75 years would be offered contractual work, renewable on a yearly basis, to address this issue.

“That would reduce their tension arising from sitting idly at home. This would provide an income besides the pension and the allowance of MVR 5,000 for elderly citizens,” Dr. Muizzu said.

“We assure to bring joy to everyone.”
