Former Maldives president Abdulla Yameen pledges to develop an airport at Haa Alifu Atoll Dhihdhoo.

He made the assurance should he secure presidency in the upcoming elections.

The former Maldivian head of state commenced his trip to various islands of the upper-northern atoll last Saturday, October 15.

During his visit to Dhidhoo, the former president had criticized current administration. According to him, the parliament seat of Dhihdhoo constituency was handed to ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) with high hopes, but its constituents have only faced disappointment.

The former president lambasted current administration, claiming it had failed to fulfill the needs of Dhihdhoo constituents.

According to Yameen, this has resulted in Dhihdhoo constituents once again reaching out to the PPM leader with their needs. He affirmed to meet the demands of the constituents should Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) secure ruling party spot in 2023.

"I assure you, my term will not come to an end before I facilitate development of an airport in Dhihdhoo," Yameen assured.

Moreover, he stressed the need to improve Island Aviation, which runs the national carrier; Maldivian, prior to commencing an airport development project in Dhihdhoo. Yameen assured his next presidency will not waste time on unnecessary research or surveys and will get right into taking required action.

Yameen had noted that the current time frame prior to elections was the opportune time to assess the areas of improvement in the fisheries sector, youth demands, and even the requirements of constituencies including Dhihdhoo.

During his presidency which started in 2013 and ended in 2018, Yameen's administration completed airports in Haa Dhaalu Atoll Kulhdhuffushi, Dhaalu Atoll Kudahuvadhoo, Shaviyani Atoll Funadhoo, Lhaviyani Atoll Madivaru and Noonu Atoll Maafaru; where expansion and redevelopment plan is currently ongoing.
