Leaders of the opposition coalition started a tour of the islands in Kaafu atoll on Tuesday to invite the local residents to attend the political rally "Felaalaifi" scheduled to be held on Friday.

"Felaalaifi" means "strung dry" in Dhivehi.

The Vice President of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam and the Vice President of People's National Congress (PNC) Madduvari MP Adam Shareef, along with Hulhumalé council member Ibrahim Shujau and Maavashu MP Mohamed Saeed will be leading the tour.

The PPM/PNC coalition delegation will visit all islands in Kaafu atoll except Kaashidhoo and Gaafaru.

Speaking to the press before departing on the tour, MP Shiyam said the cost of living and price of basic goods are now unattainable and that the government has "strung their people dry." He said that the main focus of the trip would be to explain the current situation to the locals.

He also stated that the rally on Friday is being held to express their discontent with how the government has made life difficult for Maldivians.

The opposition met the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ali Hashim last Thursday to express concern over the government's lack of transparency on the financial and economic situation in the country.

They said that Hashim was not able to provide them with a satisfactory answer to their concerns. MP Shiyam claimed that the central bank was not aware of how the government was managing its finances.

"MMA is not aware of the details of the loans this government keeps taking. Is there a bigger worry than this for Maldivians?" he asked.

The opposition rally will be held on Friday night at the Carnival area in Malé at 8:30 P.M.

This is the first PPM-PNC rally being held after the coalition suspended campaign activities for a while.
