Local media outlet Mihaaru reported that Chief Magistrate of Kanduhulhudhoo, Hassan Didi, is being investigated by the police for sexual harassment.
Per media reports, the magistrate committed the offence last year. Police confirmed on Friday that the Family and Child Protection Department in capital Male' City was investigating such a case, but did not disclose further information.
Judicial Service Commission (JSC) placed the magistrate under suspension in July 2019 over several ongoing investigations. The judicial watchdog has not disclosed the nature of the cases.
Further allegations against the magistrate include harassing female staff at the Kanduhulhudhoo Court in Gaafu Alif Atoll. One of the accusations claim that he had shown pornography to the staff.
Reports of the magistrate's case came amidst an ongoing police investigation into the sexual abuse of a 2-year-old child from the same island. On Friday, the police arrested three men said to be the victim's father, grandfather and great-grandfather in connection to the case.
According to Mihaaru, the victim's grandfather had previously been arrested and charged twice in the past due to similar crimes. One of the cases is still ongoing at Kanduhulhudhoo Court.
The public is raising concern over the situation, noting the incidences of repeat offenders, especially considering the serious nature of the crimes.
