A man who travelled to the Maldives with his wife on their honeymoon has died by drowning during a snorkelling trip.

The incident took place in popular tourist island Kaafu atoll's Maafushi island on 7th October.

While it has been common practice for authorities to announce similar incidents in the past, this incident has been an exception. However, when asked by local media outlet Mihaaru, Police confirmed the incident and detailed that they are investigating the case.

Local reports say that the couple went snorkelling during bad weather with a private water sports service provider. The guesthouse where the couple were staying had cancelled its snorkelling excursions for the day due to the weather, according to the reports.

However, the couple, who visited the country for the first time, are said to have seen a group going snorkelling and went with them after that water sports service provider told them the weather was good.

The provider is said to have taken a large group of tourists on the excursion that day, while those who didn't know how to swim were made to wear life jackets. According to Mihaaru, the couple also got into the sea with their life jackets, but the man went missing later on.

"The woman was too scared to be in the water with the life jacket so she came aboard. But it wasn't apparent that the man had gone missing yet. There were many tourists in the sea. There weren't enough water sports personnel to look after all of them," someone with knowledge of the incident told Mihaaru.

According to him, the man was found later washed up to the shore.

Police said they are now investigating the case. However, no details have been made public as of yet.
