The latest consolidated census data shows a population increment of 16,897 in the past eight years.
Maldives initiated a nationwide census in 2022 after an eight year hiatus. The last census activity was held back in 2014.
Preliminary statistics released Thursday, October 20 confirms total population count at 355,331. In 2014, Maldives reported a population of 338,434.
Additionally, expatriate count stood at 97,000 in the recent census data compared to the 2014 statistics, during which expatriate total was 63,637. The expatriate population has increased by nearly 33,000.
Data further indicates this total covers only 65 percent of the expatriates recorded with Maldives Immigration. Maldives Bureau of Statistics (MBS) is currently attempting trace the remaining 35 percent.
MBS further confirms, under the census initiative, it had gathered data from 89 percent of locals; inclusive of individuals residing domestically or abroad. The bureau is currently working on collecting data on the remaining population percentile.
The bureau encourages individuals who have not either provided information, or were contacted by census enumerators, to communicate with the authority on their hotline or via their website.
