UNFPA, NBS host lecture on population dynamics

United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), on Wednesday, hosted a lecture concerning population dynamics and sustainable development at the Maldives National University (MNU) Business School in the capital city of Male'.

Held in partnership with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the lecture was delivered by Senior Professor at the University of Colombo's Department of Demography Lakshman Dissanayake.

During the presentation, the professor touched upon several salient features of Maldives' demographic make-up and its implications on sustainable development. Following an overview of recorded statistics, he also revealed projections for total population growth in the country.

The lecture was hosted in the lead up to the Nairobi Summit, scheduled to be held from November 12 to 14 to mark the 25th anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD).

Maldives is scheduled to send a delegation to the Nairobi Summit which aims to mobilize the political will and financial commitment to fully implement the ICPD.

Signed in Cairo, Egypt, by 179 governments, the ICPD stipulated that signatory countries adopt a landmark Programme of Action which set out to empower women and girls for their own benefit as well as that of their families, communities and nations.
