An amendment to the Political Parties Act has been submitted, proposing that the primary colors and emblems of dissolved political parties may not be used by another political party within five years of the party being dissolved.
This proposed change, part of the Political Parties Act amendment bill, is currently under review in Parliament's committee stage.
The amendment submitted by Fares-Maathodaa MP Ashraf Rasheed, seeks to restrict the use of names, colors, logos, and symbols associated with defunct parties. The motion received backing from 41 members of Parliament. 41 MPs present had voted on the proposal.
The amendment also stipulates penalties for political parties and reduces their allocated state budget.
Violations would result in fines, including a penalty of MVR 100,000 on the offending party. Additionally, the amendment proposes altering the budget allocation for political parties from 0.1 percent to a range of 0.1–0.2 percent of the state’s revenue.
This bills comes as recent discussions surfaced about the possibility of dissolving Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM).
