Maldives National Party (MNP) proposed an amendment to the Political Parties Act to remove the article stipulating the state has to allocate funds for political parties.

The amendment was submitted by Vice President of MNP and parliament representative for Vilimale' constituency Ahmed Usham.

The reason cited was because he does not believe it is fair and appropriate to provide funds from the state budget to political parties.

According to the Political Parties Act, political parties are required to be funded at 0.1-0.2 percent from the annual state budget.

Usham had proposed to remove that article, as well as the article stating that parties with over 10,000 members only will receive funds.

Additionally, he also proposed to eliminate the article stating at least 3,000 members should be in a political party, and parties that do not meet the required mark should be dissolved.
