The president of the Elections Commission (EC), Ahmed Shareef, on Friday cautioned political parties against supporting causes that threatened the national interests of Maldives.

The watchdog's president made the statement via Twitter, in response to concerns over death threats recently expressed against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Maldives Police Service is currently investigating an incident concerning an individual calling for President Solih to be 'burned' or 'set on fire', during a TV programme which was broadcasted live across the nation by Channel 13.

On Sunday, the police confirmed that a 47-year-old Maldivian man was apprehended in connection to the case.

In addition to the police, Maldives Broadcasting Commission (BroadCom) also announced an investigation over Channel 13 permitting the broadcast of violent threats against President Solih.

On social media platforms, several individuals including top government officials have condemned the threats against President Solih as hatespeech and an act of terrorism.

Channel 13 has issued a public apology for its broadcast and has asserted that the individual's statements were solely his personal opinions.
