After a prolonged period, individuals have begun to occupy and reside in police apartments.

Chief Superintendent of Police Ahmed Shifan told Mihaaru News that individuals have been granted permission to inhabit the apartments. However, due to the absence of installed elevators at present, occupancy is restricted up to the fifth floor.

Work is underway to install elevators in the towers, and one elevator in each tower will be operational by April 20, he said.

Maldives National Defence Force flats (Sifco Hiya) were handed over to Noomadi, a company undertaking large-scale projects in the Maldives, in 2013, while the construction of police flats was handed over to them a year later.

The contract was terminated when the company failed to complete the project. Later, the project was handed over to Island Expert. However, they declared bankruptcy during the Covid-19 pandemic and pulled out from both projects.

The government had then awarded Amin Construction the contract to complete some of the work on the police flats for MVR 275 million, while the remaining work was assigned to the Police Welfare Company, POLCO.

The agreement stipulated that the flats had to be completed by September 20, 2022. However, work was extensively delayed due to several issues.

The MNDF flats were later handed over to China's "The Twenty-Third Metallurgical Construction Group". After the work was completed, people began to inhabit the housing towers.

The three police housing flat towers will have a total of 361 flats and 20 penthouses. More than MVR 500 million has been spent to complete the housing towers, while MVR 548 million has been spent to complete the three MNDF housing towers.
