Assistant Commissioners Ali Shujau and Ismail Naveen have applied for the position of Police Commissioner.

Homeland Security Minister Ali Ihsan told Mihaaru News that Shujau and Naveen submitted their applications for the police commissioner's post before the deadline. "Their names have been forwarded to the police board," he said, adding that the police board will undergo a thorough evaluation before making a decision.

According to the Police Services Act, the appointment of a Police Commissioner must be from the rank of Assistant Commissioner or higher. The law dictates that the police board conducts interviews and assesses the applicants' capabilities, providing recommendations to the President, who then appoints the police commissioner based on these recommendations.

The position of Police Commissioner has been vacant since November 15, following the retirement of former Police Commissioner Mohamed Hameed. Currently, Assistant Commissioner Farhad Fikri is serving as the acting Commissioner.

It has been revealed that the government, under President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, delayed appointing a police commissioner until the conclusion of the case involving Ahmed Mohamed, an Assistant Commissioner among the officers dismissed from the police service based on the Police Board's recommendations.

However, on December 13, the High Court ruled that there was no reason to review the interim order passed by the High Court to stay re-employment of four other officers, including Ahmed Mohamad.

The High Court had earlier issued an order staying the execution of the Civil Court's judgment pending the appeal. Jamsheed Ahmed Mohamed had sought to review the order. The remaining officers are still in police service.

The High Court, in its verdict, stated that there was no change in the situation at the time of passing the order. While the remaining officers were in service, the fact that Jamshed Ahmed Mohamad had not been reemployed was not a ground for review of the order, the judgment said.
