President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has constituted the new Police Board on Thursday.

While the Police Board has been constituted on Thursday, the Commissioner of Police post remains vacant. This is because appointees to senior ranks in the police, except for Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, need to be approved by the police board. However, the board does not preside over or comment on the day to day work of the police services. Only the Commissioner of Police has to report and be accountable to the police board.

As per the Police Act, the President, on the advice of his cabinet of ministers, will appoint a Commissioner of Police from among officers on a list of names vetted by the Police Board and submitted to the President. Officers holding ranks upwards of Assistant Commissioner can be appointed to the position.
