The former Commissioner of Police Ahmed Faseeh has been appointed to the vacant post in the Police Board.

The President’s Office confirmed the appointment on Monday.

The post became vacant after the president of the board, Ali Faiz, was appointed as the Maldives’ ambassador to Sri Lanka.

A new president will be elected after a vote amongst the members.

Faseeh served at the Maldives Police Services for 23-years. He retired 2012.

The Police Board was established in April, 2021 after the enactment of the Police Service Act. Section 75(a) of the Act mandates the formulation of a seven-member board, with two members appointed by the President, three members from a relevant field, and two members appointed to represent the public.

The current Police Board members are:

1. Ahmed Fayyaz Hassan

2. Aishath Noora Mohamed

3. Ahmed Nashid

4. Adam Ibrahim

5. Hamid Abdul Ghafoor

6. Safa Shareef

7. Ahmed Faseeh

The Police Board was also mandated with approving police officers above the rank of superintendent, with the exception of the incumbent Commissioner of Police and the Deputy Commissioner of Police. However, the board will not oversee or monitor daily police activities. Only the Commissioner of Police is accountable to the board.
