Maldives Police Service, on Thursday, disposed of 324 kilograms of drugs at Dhoonidhoo, Kaafu Atoll.
According to the police, the destroyed drugs were confiscated as 12,778 separate pieces of evidence for numerous cases before June 2020. This included 108 kilograms of heroin, 158 kilograms of cannabis, 39 kilograms of methamphetamine, 14 kilograms of cocaine and 1.7 kilograms of MDMA.
The disposal process was overseen by a five-member committee formed by the Prosecutor General.
Minister of Home Affairs Imran Abdulla, Commissioner of Police Mohamed Hameed and other top police officials witnessed the event.
Speaking at the event, the home minister assured that several efforts were underway to create a drug-free society. He highlighted that a large quantity of drugs were confiscated as part of such endeavours.
In June 2019, the police disposed of 419 kilograms of drugs confiscated starting from January 2014.
