The Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of US Department of State for South and Central Asian Affairs, Alice Wells, met with President-Elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and Maldives’ Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer on Wednesday.

Solih has yet to disclose details of the meeting with the US Diplomat.

In her ongoing visits to Sri Lanka and the Maldives, she arrived in Maldives on Tuesday. She first met with some of the 12 opposition legislators who were declared unseated from parliament by the Elections Commission last year for floor-crossing.

During her meeting with the Foreign Secretary, Wells had discussed how the two countries can strengthen their bilateral ties. Furthermore, Wells highlighted the importance of battling terrorism and solidifying democracy in the Maldives.

Wells is also scheduled to sit down with Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh, Minister of Defence and National Security Adam Shareef, and Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture Mohamed Shainee.

The former Ambassador to Jordan assumed the position of the Acting Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of US Department of State for South and Central Asian Affairs in 2017.
