Police request opposition to postpone Kolamaafushi visit

Maldives Police Service has requested the opposition coalition's presidential candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu), to postpone his campaign trip to Kolamaafushi, Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll.

Ibu is scheduled to continue his campaign canvass throughout the Gaafu Dhaalu and Gaafu Alifu atolls beginning Friday and his visit to Kolamaafushi was originally scheduled for Saturday.

However, due to the commotion that took place in Kolamaafushi on Wednesday between supporters of the ruling party and of the opposition coalition, the Police have requested Ibu to postpone his trip to Kolamaafushi. There have been a reported 18 arrests made so in relation to this incident.

Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has accused supporters of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) as having instigated the uproar. However, these are accusations that MDP has vehemently denied.

While speaking at a press conference held at 'Iskandar Koshi', Chief Superintendent of Police, Ahmed Shifan stated that the Police will always strive to guarantee the safety of both presidential candidates and that therefore they advise the opposition coalition to postpone their campaign trip to Kolamaafushi.

In addition, Shifan also said that the upcoming elections should not be a basis for any type of violence and asserted that it will not be tolerated.

He also stated that the Police will take necessary action to ensure the safety of the Maldivian people.
