The Criminal Court of the Maldives has given the life sentence to a person caught drug trafficking who confessed to doing so in the hope of saving a friend’s father.
In December 2019, on a launch departing from the capital Male', another person next to the confessor Azwad Mohamed was caught with 19 grams of narcotics. However Azwad instigated it to be his possession.
While he initially denied the charges for trafficking Diamorphine, he reiterated that he confessed in the investigation to save a friend’s father from going to jail and that he had no inclination of the drugs in question.
In the final hearing, he was found guilty of the charge with evidence and sentenced to life imprisonment with MVR 2 million as a fine that has to be paid within a year. The sentence was ruled by Judge Hassan Saeed.
