Police arrested a 55 year old local man, a 28 year old Thai woman, and two 30 year old Thai women during a special raid operation. This operation was conducted after receiving information that female expatriates were engaging in prostitution at a spa in Malé City.
Police stated that the local man arrested in the case was released under conditions during the remand hearing held at the Criminal Court. The Thai women involved were remanded in custody for 15 days.
Two Vietnamese women were also detained for prostitution earlier this week, following a raid prompted by intelligence on widespread prostitution in the city.
Many believe that the spas which claim to provide professional massage services in the country are actually in the prostitution business. Some expatriate women who offer these services even advertise themselves on social media with their mobile numbers as well.
Although authorities occasionally conduct raids to stop such establishments, not all are closed down. These spas are often run entirely by foreign women, including collecting payments.
