Presidential Commission on Enforced Disappearances and Deaths, on Wednesday, forwarded a concluded case of death to Maldives Police Service, seeking to press charges for the first time.
A tweet by the commission announced that charges are to be pressed against those negligent in the death of Hussain Zareer, aged 28, who was awaiting trial at the high-security Maafushi Prison.
However, the commission did not reveal details about any authorities facing the charges.
Zareer passed away on November 8, 2016, while he was undergoing medical treatment at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH). Authorities checked him into the hospital less than 24 hours before his death for undisclosed medical reasons.
The Presidential Commission was established by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to investigate cases of deaths and enforced disappearances between January 1, 2012, to November 17, 2018.
Currently, 24 cases are under investigation, including the murders of former Ungoofaaru MP Dr Afraasheem Ali and blogger Yameen Rasheed. The commission is also probing the disappearance of well-known journalist Ahmed Rilwan.
President of the commission Husnu Al Suood announced last April that the culprits behind the three high-profile cases were found, although no charges have been pressed against them as of yet.
