The state renounced plans by the previous administrations to reclaim land in Galufalhu lagoon, confirming that the picnic island allotted for local use, would be a natural one.

Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom's government had planned to reclaim two artificial islands in the lagoon between Dhoonidhoo and Feydhoo Finolhu. One islands was to be designated for recreation while the other was to be developed with rooms and restaurants.

However, administration had changed before work on this project commenced.

According to local media Mihaaru, President Solih's administration will not follow through with the land reclamation plans of the past government. The media reported that the Ministry of National Planning and Infrastructure is presently working on allocating a natural island for local enjoyment instead.

The ministry has yet to make an official statement regarding the matter.

President Solih spoke about allocating a picnic island for locals earlier this week even though no details about the island were disclosed. Appropriating an island for such purposes within the vicinity of Male, chiefly for residents in the city zone, is one of President Solih's 100 day pledges.

Most of the islands around Male' previously utilized by locals were later leased for tourism, including Kuda Bandos, Maadhoo Finolhu and Feydhoo Finolhu.
