Male' City Mayor Adam Azim has called on the government to expedite the handover of flats to the 4000 recipients of the flats being built in Hulhumale' Phase 2 by Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC).

The construction of these apartment towers were contracted to FDC during the administration of former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih. Although that administration had compiled a list of flat recipients, the list is under review currently by a Flat Committee formed under the incumbent government.

Last month, Minister of Housing, Land and Urban Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed said that the construction of these flats would reach completion by mid-2025.

Male' City Council held a press conference regarding this matter today, where Azim said that the people do not have any interest in listening to excuses by the government for not resolving the housing issues faced by Male' residents. He emphasized the need to swiftly address the housing issues faced by Male' residents, adding that these residents live under difficult conditions at present.

"This is not about one citizen. I am requesting the government, too, to find a swift resolution to this issue. For everyone to make time. Even if 24 hours have to be freed up, it is vital to address this issue of protecting the rights of Male' residents, and protecting their rights to housing," Azim said.

Calling for the flat to be publicized, he emphasized that, even in a legal sense, it is wrong to take back what has once been granted.

Azim said that on Wednesday, the council will deliberate on the matter and bring it to the attention of the government. He assured that a decision of the council will not infringe upon the rights of any citizen, adding that they will work to protect the rights of all.
