The body of the newborn discovered from the garbage dump of Alif Dhaalu atoll Dhigurah has been transported abroad for postmortem.
The infant was discovered earlier on December 3, discarded to the garbage dump inside a plastic trash bag. The baby had passed away at the time of discovery.
Local authorities arrested a Sri Lankan female in suspicion of the cash, and remanded until her trial concluded.
A police media official confirmed the infant's body was transported to India for postmortem some time on Friday, December 15.
Mihaaru News has learned the baby was conceived by an expatriate working in one of the island's guesthouses. In addition to being deceased, the abandoned infant's umbilical cord was not properly cut.
Ibrahim Usman, the President of Dhigurah island council, said that the baby was discovered the following morning when an employee at the island's waste disposal facility was at work.
The council president further said that the newborn was discovered while the waste management employees were attempting to discard garbage at the waste disposal site.
