Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH), on Wednesday, unveiled a pharmacy primarily aimed at serving cancer patients, situated in the oncology department of the hospital.

The pharmacy was officially inaugurated by the hospital's CEO Ibrahim Saleem and the first Maldivian surgical oncologist Mohamed Shifan. Pharmacy services will be provided every day from 0900hrs to 1600hrs.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, Saleem revealed that the aim of opening a pharmacy in the hospital's oncology department was in line with IGMH's efforts to provide services with feasibility.

Shifan told local media Mihaaru that the Pharmacy will always stock the standard medications for cancer. He added that if a doctor prescribes a drug that is not available, the pharmacy will also bring the medications from abroad, within a week.

"Since cancer medication must be stored at certain conditions, when they are stored in bulk they expire. Instead of that, drugs will be imported when the patients need them", Shifan elaborated.

Shifan added that more varieties of drugs will be available from the pharmacy in the future.

In addition to prescribed drugs, the pharmacy will also provide other items required by cancer patients.

All the medication sold from this pharmacy is included under Aasandha, the national health insurance scheme.

Furthermore, Shifan stated that the pharmacy will also issue medication for prescriptions by oncologists registered in the Maldives Medical Council, even if they are consulting in other hospitals,

"We are trying to provide all the facilities in one place to so patients have easier access. [This will] stop the need for patients to go to many pharmacies with their prescription".
