PG charges 10 suspects of 72kg drug bust at Criminal Court

The Prosecutor General’s (PG) Office, on Sunday, filed charges at the Criminal Court against the 10 suspects arrested over smuggling 72 kilograms of drugs into Maldives.

The drugs, smuggled aboard marine vessel ‘Masjaree 2’, were seized in Male’ City in a special operation conducted by Maldives Police Service on December 8, 2020.

According to the PG Office, all of the ten suspects arrested in the smuggling attempt, allegedly led by Irufan Thagiyyu aged 32 and Mohamed Wisham aged 28, were charged with trafficking diamorphine.

Including the accused ring leaders, Abdulla Wishaam aged 26, Ahmed Naseer aged 38, Mohamed Akram aged 27, Mohamed Shareef aged 34, Mohamed Furugaan aged 33, Ahmed Shinaan aged 30, Ali Ahmed aged 37, and Mohamed Wajeeh aged 35 face the diamorphine charges.

If convicted, they could face of five to ten years and a fine between MVR 15,000 to 250,000.

Three of the ten suspects, Ahmed Naseer, Mohamed Akram and Mohamed Shareef, were also additionally charged with the usage of cannabis, and stand to face a prison sentence of five years for the separate charges.
