The Japanese government has launched the Project for Human Resources Development Scholarship (JDS), offering six scholarships annually.

Each participating university will provide two scholarships. The scholarship covers all tuition, travel, and living expenses in Japan.

The scholarship is awarded to employees of various government agencies to pursue master’s degrees, supporting the development of human resources needed for administration.

It also offers an opportunity to advance higher education, with the aim of enabling employees to fully contribute to the formulation of the country's social and economic development plans and play a leading role in national progress.

The Japanese Government has been offering this scholarship to the Maldives since 2020. The scholarship is open to:

- Master of Arts in Economics or Master of Arts in International Development from the International University of Japan (IUJ)

- Master of Arts in International Relations from Ritsumeikan University

- Master of Science in International Cooperation Policy from Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University (APU)

Applications for the scholarship are open to individuals aged between 22 and 39 as of April 1, 2025.

Eligible applicants must be civil servants with a MQA validated bachelor’s degree, permanent employees of independent institutions, courts, or related agencies. They must also be full-time employees with at least two years of work experience.

JDS will host promotional seminars to provide detailed information on the scholarship, including guidance on preparing and submitting application documents.

Applications must be submitted online by 4:00 p.m. on November 24. For more information, visit https://jds-scholarship.org/country/maldives/index.html.

Since its launch in 2020, the JDS scholarship has awarded 21 students the opportunity to study in Japan. Of these, 12 have returned to the Maldives after completing their master’s degrees.
