A ministry official said that work is currently ongoing to repurpose the dedicated seaplane for use as an air ambulance. They assured that the work would be completed and the aircraft ready for use by mid-March.
Besides the seaplane, a Dash 8 aircraft from Maldivian is being used in the National Air Ambulance Service.
The Ministry has earlier said that the air ambulances will transfer patients in emergency situations to the nearest island with a tertiary hospital. The air ambulances will have first response medical facilities and will be staffed with a crew 0f 15 medical professionals including 5 doctors, 5 nurses and 5 medical technicians.
While the Dash 8 has the capacity to carry 2 patients at one time, the seaplane can carry only one.
