On the occasion of its 36th anniversary, ADK Hospital on Wednesday introduced a new Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system.

ADK Hospital introduced the Magnetom Lumina (3T) MRI system, which was officially unveiled by the State Minister of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Shah Mahir.

The newly introduced 3T MRI machine will be 50 percent faster, allow for better-detailed scans, and make less noise than the previous machine. The machine is designed to ensure the patient does not feel claustrophobic while inside the machine, said ADK.

The hospital also said the new 3T MRI machine is suitable for stroke patients and children as well.

Speaking at the ceremony, ADK Hospital's Managing Director Ahmed Affal said that they are always looking for ways to improve patient care by bringing in new medical innovations and equipment.

"We were the first to install an MRI machine and operate it in the Maldives. It will be 20 years since the first MRI scan was made here, and today we have expanded the service," he said.

He also assured patients that the hospital's new MRI machine will significantly minimise long waits for MRI exams.

"Currently, patients have to be waitlisted for nearly two weeks for MRI scans. We make an average of 45 scans daily, but with the introduction of our new machine, we will be able to make 90 scans each day, which will greatly reduce the waiting period," Affal elaborated.

ADK Hospital’s aim is to make 100 MRI scans every day, and it is currently working to introduce Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan, which is currently unavailable in the Maldives.

Dr. Mahir said that the integration of new medical advancements will reduce the number of locals traveling abroad for medical requirements. He also emphasised the importance of introducing advanced medical services in private health institutions and thanked ADK Hospital for its continued efforts in developing the health sector.

Besides introducing the new MRI machine, the hospital held a celebratory event to commemorate its anniversary. During the ceremony, ADK Group’s Chairman Ahmed Nashid thanked the hospital staff for their hard work and dedication to patients.
