The 76th President of the United Nations General Assembly Mr. Abdulla Shahid has urged the intergovernmental organization to appoint a lady as its next Secretary General.

Mr. Shahid made the statement at the inaugural ceremony of the 66th assembly of the UN Commission on the Status of Women. He highlighted that despite the organization being active for 76 years, a woman has never been elected as the organization's Secretary-General.

The UN General Assembly President, who also fills the position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Maldives, claimed that it was "high-time" the organization identified the importance of gender equality and combat archaic traditions.

Moreover, Mr. Shahid noted that at a time when global movements to champion gender equality have erupted in all corners of the Maldives, the absence of a female SG in an organization such as the UN cannot be accepted.
