Maldives records 1,204 new COVID-19 cases

Health Protection Agency (HPA) on Monday announced that 1,204 tested positive for COVID-19, while 248 people recovered.

The high This was the highest number of positive cases in the country within a 24 hour period, breaking the record of 1,091 cases, set only the previous day.

Similar to Sunday, HPA said while a majority of the COVID positives were from samples they took on Monday, 475 samples were taken on previous days. Out of the 5,598 samples tested within the period, 729 positives came from samples taken on Monday itself.

This increased the confirmed COVID cases in the country to a total of 37,019.

Meanwhile, 248 people made full recoveries, bringing the total figure to 26,547 till date.

HPA revealed that of the new cases, 961 were from the greater Male’ region while 235 cases from residential islands and eight cases from operational resorts.

Maldives is currently in its worst COVID wave still date. The fatality rate has increased rapidly. Although only a few days into May, the record for highest fatalities have been broken, with the previous figures being 10 deaths in February this year.

With 10,376 active cases, this is the highest the figure has been too.

In the media briefing by Health Emergency Operations Center (HEOC) on Monday evening, Spokesperson to the President, Mohamed Mabrook Azeez revealed that the 17th floor of Dharumavantha Hospital has also been utilised for the treatment of COVID patients, in addition to the 11th floor.

On March 12, 2020, WHO classified the spread of COVID-19 as a global pandemic. To date, the new strain of novel coronavirus has infected over 159 million people and claimed over 3.3 million lives around the world. However, out of those infected, more than 138 million people have recovered.
